Wild Expressions Tailor-made African safaris

Tamaryn “Tammy” Slieker

Field Guide NQF 2

I’m a qualified safari guide and safari consultant with a passion for creating calm, meaningful wildlife experiences that go beyond simply finding animals. My guiding style is patient, observant, and immersive, focusing on the smaller details of the bush — animal behaviour, bird calls, plant uses, and the subtle interactions that make every sighting unique.

I began my guiding career in 2015 on a Big 5 private reserve in the Eastern Cape and have experience in vehicle safaris, walking activities, photographic guiding, and family-friendly safaris. I particularly enjoy helping guests better understand animal behaviour and the stories unfolding around them in the wild.

Alongside guiding, I’m also a wildlife artist specialising in charcoal portraiture focused on wildlife conservation awareness, often drawing inspiration directly from my experiences in the bush.

Jaun Slabbert

Field Guide NQF 2

I’m a qualified safari guide with a genuine passion for the wildlife and the small details that make it so special. My work is rooted in patience, respect for wildlife, and a belief that the bush is best experienced by sitting quietly and listening to the sounds around us, I aim to create experiences that feel authentic and special.

Over time, I’ve developed an interest in animal behaviour especially with the big cats and birds and the subtle interactions that often go unnoticed. I enjoy sharing what I’ve learned, but I’m just as happy to let the environment speak for itself. Every day in the bush is different and you never truly know what to expect and the next corner.

Speciality – Animal behaviour with the big cats and birds

Gavin van der Westhuizen

Field Guide NQF 2

Gavin Van Der Westhuizen’s journey into tourism began in 2002 when he and his wife moved to Hazyview to manage a timeshare resort. Living so close to the bush quickly sparked a deep interest in wildlife, birding and the natural environment.

What started with borrowed binoculars and family trips into the Lowveld soon grew into something much bigger. In 2005, Gavin founded GAP Tours & Transfers after recognising a growing need for reliable tourism transport in the area. His passion for sharing the Lowveld with visitors naturally led him to qualify as a Nature and Cultural Guide in 2007.

Outgoing, knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about people, Gavin particularly enjoys introducing guests to the wildlife and landscapes of the Kruger region. For him, one of the greatest rewards of guiding is witnessing a guest experience an animal they have dreamed of seeing for the very first time.

Vusi Ntimane

Field Guide NQF 2

Vusi Ntimane grew up in the small village of Steenbok, surrounded by nature and a strong sense of community. From an early age, he developed a deep appreciation for the natural world, a passion that was strengthened by family visits to the Kruger National Park.

Becoming a guide was a natural calling for Vusi. After completing his guiding qualification, he found a way to combine his love of wildlife with his passion for teaching and sharing knowledge. His favourite animal is the leopard, which he admires for its grace, mystery and quiet presence in the wilderness.

One of Vusi’s most memorable guiding experiences came during a winter sunset drive, when guests were treated to an extraordinary combination of lions, buffalo, rhino, leopard and even a rare black rhino at the same sighting area. Encounters like these remind him of the privilege of guiding and sharing Kruger with others.

Vusi is especially passionate about educating younger generations on the importance of conservation and protecting the natural environment. His favourite places include Orpen Dam and Mkhumbi View Point, where he feels especially connected to the wilderness.

His personal motto, “Let’s share our experience with the world,” reflects his belief that nature is something to be appreciated, protected and shared.

Edward Themba

Field Guide NQF 2

Edward Themba’s journey into nature and guiding began in Kaapschehoop, where the area’s remarkable landscapes and birdlife sparked a lasting passion for the natural world.

In 2001, he joined the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Blue Swallow Working Group, where he spent five years working as a bird guide and assisting with the monitoring of breeding pairs of the endangered Blue Swallow. His responsibilities included preparing and maintaining nesting sites ahead of the summer breeding season, giving him valuable hands-on conservation experience and a deeper understanding of the importance of protecting sensitive habitats and species.

Edward joined GAP Tours & Transfers in 2008, where he has continued to build on his extensive knowledge of birding, wildlife and the cultural heritage of the region. Over the years, he has guided guests from around the world, sharing not only sightings but also the stories, ecology and traditions that make the Lowveld so special.

For Edward, guiding is far more than a profession. It is an opportunity to educate, inspire and help guests develop a greater appreciation for wildlife and the natural environment. Whether sharing a rare bird sighting or an encounter with iconic African wildlife, his aim is always to create meaningful experiences and lasting memories.
